"American Idol" Top 10 Tackles Billy Joel's Deep Catalog

With the catalog of Billy Joel week hitting American Idol’s Top 10, we must resist the temptation to use “car wreck” metaphors to describe bad performances (see DeAndre, below). Tackling Billy Joel is no small undertaking; as someone who performed “New York State of Mind” way back in the day, he’s got complex melodies and iconic phrasing. Still, his songs offer great material for everyone - and it showed in many cases. Here is my take (in order of appearance):
DeAndre Brackensick - “Only the Good Die Young” Is MilliVanilli trending yet? (Answer: yes.) The judges are smoking the funny stuff on this one - DeAndre was terrible. DeAndre danced like Debbie Gibson and sang about as well, too. Seems like a sweet kid, but not in the top tier. Will be in the bottom three tomorrow night. Grade: D+
Erica Van Pelt - “New York State of Mind” F*cking HOT. Dig the new look, too. We’ll wait and see how the rest of the folks did, but one of the best of the night. Randy’s note about going for runs is right, too, in that she’s got terrific phrasing and is perhaps pulling some punches for later. JLo’s note about her being more expressive was great as well. This is a tough song to cover and she did it up nice. Grade: A-
Joshua Ledet - “She’s Got a Way” As Randy said, “never feel defeated” when you have talent like this. Really strange arrangement actually; I’ve been a fan of Joshua since the beginning, but I feel like this was an opportunity for subtlety that he didn’t take. I’m a huge gospel fan, too, but I really connected with what JLo said about the lyric - we as singers are obliged to tell the story, not just sing the song well. Decent job. He should get through to next week. Grade: B
Skylar Laine - “Shameless” Forget the song: I’d still like to know who the twink was in the trucker cap at the open. But I digress… Terrible style change fashion-wise - totally out of touch with her country roots. The song felt screechy to me and not all that interesting, and was flat at the front end. It leant itself to the country vibe, given the other covers of the song in that vein, but not delivered all that well. Grade: C+
Elise Testone - “Vienna” Bluesy, stellar, yummy. Talk about being rewarded for sticking to your guns… These mentors, largely, don’t know what the shit they’re talking about. Let’s not forget that they *almost steered her away from this song, and I still think - after a standing ovation from the judges - she may not garner boffo votes because of it. Still, one of the best of the nights and mad props for making an unfamiliar song personal and emotional. “I’m so happy for you! I just want to shake you and squeeze you.” Another nod to VAS from JLo. We appreciate your support of BentBlog and The Daily Slap. Best arrangement of the season thus far, too. Well done. Grade: A
Phil Phillips - “Movin’ Out” Everyone is staying true to themselves tonight - and it’s one of the takeaways from the evening. Excellent job on this joint. Phil rebuked the mentors and did a great job putting his spin on the song - and stayed on his mark style-wise. I might break from the pack a bit and say that he changed it up a bit too much for me. The song has so much groove in it already… some of it wasn’t needed. He can keep on being gray - it looks great on him. Grade: A-
Hollie Cavanaugh - “Honesty” Whoever dressed Hollie last week should be pounding the pavement for a new job this week. Regardless, she’s a bit of a frump so packaging that great voice seems like a challenge. Much better this week though, which gave her a leg up on a terrible arrangement. The performance did not survive that arrangement though, and it was hard to tell if it was her phrasing or what - but it wasn’t her best job. Grade: D+
Heejun Han - “My Life” Whoever is advising this kid, if anyone, should be on the street with last week’s dresser for Hollie. Bad Karaoke. Sharp, flat, bad diction, terrible arrangement. Entertaining doesn’t walk the dog in a singing competition - the judges were too kind. In danger of going home tomorrow. Grade: F
Jessica Sanchez - “Everybody Has a Dream” Once again, stellar. What can you say about a 16-year-old who sings like an established diva? “It takes consistency to win. You have a moment every time you step on that stage.” Randy was right, the mentors and the stylists did a great job all the way around. Fantastic. I’d only caution here that she’s so young, so unseasoned, that it might eventually catch up to her in terms of telling stories week after week. Again, I’m speechless with this budding talent. Stop the presses and give her a contract, now. Grade: A
Colton Dixon - “Piano Man” This song is ready to made as a cover for the radio. Period. Handsome and confident, he sang the song right in his wheelhouse. My only quibble here is that he squeezed his vocals a few too many times; where that technique should be the “color” of a performance, he went to it too many times. Still, Randy was right, the arrangement was simple and clean. “God use me” was tacky for those atheists among us. Still, he’ll sail through. Grade: B+
Top performances: Phil, Jessica, Elise and EVP.
Predicted bottom three: DeAndre, Hollie and Skylar.
Other notes: JLo fashions were spot-on tonight. Grade: A. Plain, uncomplicated and beautiful. The mentors should, in large part, take a step back because they are really screwing up the contestants. Stop stepping in front of the performers and leading them down wrong paths.

What do American Idol and Bent Blog have in common? JLo has Violent Affection Syndrome, and she ain’t ashamed.
The connection is simple: the Syndrome, explained here, affects those of us who thinks someone is so cute it’s aggravating – to the point you want to pinch, bite, squeeze, punch or slap the snot out of them in protest. (This is the foundation that inspired The Daily Slap, one of the Inter-webs' earliest daily offering of hot men.)
JLo reacted out of her VAS when she evaluated our first singer, Joshua Ledet, because she enjoyed his performance so much. At around 3:40 in the judges' comments is when you can see it:
On the subject of Joshua, let’s deep dive into the performances:
Joshua Ledet He werked that Stevie song, brought us back to church and, with help from ace mentor Mary J. Blige, he hooked in to the driving beat. Well done. He’s about as girly as Jacob Lusk was last season. He sported his "Mantasia," which is a shaking hand held close to the side.
Elise Testone This girl can sing… but “I’m Your Baby Tonight” was totally the wrong song for her – as was “Greatest Love,” her original choice. She seemed visibly upset about her performance and I can see why.
Jermaine “Gentle Giant” Jones Definitely evocative of Ruben Studdard – perhaps a better singer with a less-tubby charisma. “I Love You,” though, I don’t think is gonna do him any favors in moving him ahead in the competition. A snoozer.
Erica Van Pelt aka “EVP” “I Believe in You and Me” was a bad arrangement sung by a fantastic singer. I was surprised by her presence with such a huge song. Whitney is imposing to tackle for any singer, and given what she had to work with she did a good job. She just seemed to be way more free and “comfortable” than Elise Testone. JLo was right in that she was playing it safe with her phrasing and delivery.
Colton Dixon Given the fact that he’s out of his genre, big time, he was tonally on point and actually pretty in touch with the song. Randy was right about the notes flat and sharp – but he created an emotionally hooked-in “rock ballad” out of a Stevie classic. He’s pretty darn cute, too, qualifying for the evening’s Idol Slap Derby.
Shannon Magrane I get annoyed when I have to wait for singers to get out of their lower registers for the song to become interesting. “I Have Nothing” really did have nothing, though, even when she emerged from the head-voice doldrums. Very karaoke and pretty awful. Next. (PS: could this volleyball player have looked any more gargantuan next to Ryan?) Bad song choice for such a young girl.
DeAndre Brackensick We were thankfully spared DeAndre’s gratuitous falsetto, and with “Master Blaster” he definitely showed a reggae funk that was new to us. But it was bland and not nearly as good as the (frequently cheerleading) panel said it was.
Skylar Laine This girl is one to watch – she was out of her element and she still did up “Where Do Broken Hearts Go?” with some moxie. JLo was spot-on when she criticized the front half of the song; the second half was unrecognizable compared to the first. Very well done, as expected.
Heejun Han “All is Fair” was a tale of two performers – one with normally gorgeous tone (painfully sharp in one spot) and terrible diction. He doesn’t close his “t”s and other of those pesky consonants. The “Hugger in Chief” did a decent job but I don’t think he’s gonna go far, despite the fact that we love the goofballs.
Hollie Cavanagh Lacking in presence but burying the needle on cute, Hollie tackled “All the Man that I Need” and I gotta say I didn’t dig it as much as the panel did. Parts of it were good, other parts, “meh.”
Jeremy Rosado Always doing too many runs with a voice that rivals many of the others, Jeremy’s “Ribbon in the Sky” was too breathy, and lacked control and gravitas. Randy was right to note that he didn’t believe it. Not good.
Jessica Sanchez Flawless. Definitely a leading contender, especially since “I Will Always Love You” is one of the most iconic songs in the world to cover. I definitely don’t like the early coronation from the judges, though. Steven Tyler’s “you may be the one” is just lame. Just let it be a great performance and don’t pressure this young girl too much.
Phil Phillips “Superstitious” was the best of the evening. Driving, percussive, tonally perfect – and delivered by the evening’s hands-down Slap. He’s yummy, entertaining and a fantastic singer. His charisma is natural and his confidence is breezy. This guy will make records, period. The most refreshing thing about him? He’s ALWAYS dressed-down casual, and speaking as a writer who works in his jammie pants, I LOVE that. More, please.
Predicted bottom gal and guy: Elise Testone & Jeremy Rosado (possible wild card for bottom dwellers goes to Shannon Magrane)

JLo fashion grade: A Normally a train wreck, this blogger loved the dressed-down look. Keep it up, Jenny.

Update! As predicted, Elise and Jeremy notched to the bottom two, and Jeremy was sent packing. In retrospect I think Shannon was a train wreck; I'm glad the judges saved Elise. I hope she can figure herself out by next week.

Full disclosure: This is really the first full episode I've watched this season. So I'm coming in and seeing most of these performers for the very first time (except Phillip Phillips who is WICKED CUTE!).
Reed Grimm It was, I suppose, an interesting choice to take a pop song and re-cast it as a Jazz number. But I think it suffered terribly in the execution. Reed seemed like he might have an interesting voice, and be a decent performer, but it did not shine through in this performance. I suppose if he makes it through I could grow to like him, because he's kinda cute, but I may just stay annoyed.
Adam Brock WTF? Is our boy Adam into getting peed on? Why the yellow bandana-thing in the right back pocket? This was a better performance than Reed, and probably worthy of making the next round, but it didn't seem particularly strong to me.
Deandre Brackensick Wow, this started really badly. I hope it's nerves, because it was pitchy and weak and all over the place. And p.s., Justin Guarini called and wants his hair back. I guess I basically like him - he had a nice personal intro - but the performance was just awful.
SIDEBAR: Are the judges high tonight? Or is it going to be another season of "dawg, that was mad good!"? Sheesh.
Colton Dixon Does anyone else think he's trying a little to hard to channel Jared Leto? I guess he has a cool enough look - what do you think? As for the performance, once again it was just OK to me. And once again the judges "love it". God, can we have a SINGLE contrary opinion?
Jeremy Rosado The peanut gallery here is seriously rooting for Jeremy, so this should be interesting. I'm glad he pointed out his nerves - and I'm 100% certain that they're all absurdly nervous, so I guess we have to give them all a pass for small problems with their performances tonight. My first impression is that Jeremy is really a nice guy and I'm kinda rooting for him too. The performance was nice enough, I guess. I liked it more than the others, but I'm still not gaga. NOT gaga. :)
Aaron Marcellus Finally, I'm hearing vocals that sound pretty good. Not pitchy. Well suited to his voice. Nicely delivered. And his personal video depicted him as pretty nice. Aaron should make it to the next round pretty easily, I'd think. As far as the judges go, apparently the only differentiator tonight (and the rest of the season, I bet...) is the standing-o.
Chase Likens Another good song selection. Did the producers rig the order? It will be interesting to see how the other guys do. Country isn't always my favorite, but this is a good performance of this song. Maybe a hair pitchy here or there, but overall good selection and good performance. And he seems like a nice (that is, cute) guy.
Creighton Fraker What an odd-seeming person. Maybe my comment from the last contestant about stacking the deck was wrong? But now that he's started, his voice is sounding pretty good, actually. Absolutely on key, which is a nice change. I don't know if I can stand to watch him every week, but it was actually a nice performance.
Phillip Phillips My early favorite. Cute cute cute! And he always seems to do interesting arrangements of the songs he chooses. I think it's been cool so far, but I wonder if it could be his undoing. For example, this arrangement of "In the Air Tonight" started strangely to me - I think it evolved into something very cool. I guess if he can continue to do that, it could be great for him. And if he'd take off his shirt, he'd be there. Oh, and WTF? Was that a criticism from Randy? Or almost a criticism? Interesting...
Eben Franckewitz OMG. I didn't know this season was open to pre-pubescent children! The song choice was certainly ambitious - Adele, wow. And it was a reasonbly good delivery, there were only a few pitchy spots, I thought. And his voice has a very nice tone to it. I'm not sure he'll make the top 6, however. And was that more criticism from the judges? Maybe they're getting into the groove too.
Heejun Han This is one quirky little dude, but I liked his home video. And his voice seems like such a contrast to the rest of him - I love that. I think that may be one of the best traditional performances of the night, honestly. I say "traditional" because I think Phillip's was decidedly non-traditional, but it was fabulous. On Heejun, I agree with J-Lo: Heejun's voice is smooth as silk.
Joshy here is number 12. I guess there's going to be a number 13? I'm still interested to see if "water skier boy" (that's what I call him) is going to make it.
Josh Ledet Anyway, on to Josh. Great start on this song for Josh, I think. He seems to have a really nice range, and a great tone to his voice. And wow! That was quite a finish. Another standing-o from the judges. I guess they like him. I think he'll make it through.
Jermaine Jones Well, I'm sorry it wasn't the cute water skier boy, but the peanut gallery here doesn't seem to care. And I confess, Jermaine sounds really good. I don't know if he'll make it through, but I like him - and I LOVED seeing him tower over the little douchebag.

P.S. I've been spending 95% of my time lately searching for new employment. Who knew that interviewing for a job was so hard? For various reasons, it's been quite some time since I had to do so. But I'm hopeful that the search process is nearing its end and my posting will, I hope, return to normal levels. I do have a zesty item or two to post soon.
I have to apologize for my light - OK, complete lack of - posting recently. But I have an excuse, I swear. You see, we moved to a new house, and let me just say this:
HughesNet (SUCKS), you see, is satellite internet service. We moved to a charming little house in a really rural spot around here, and frankly it seems like a miracle to have phone service. So the only "real" alternative to dial-up is (supposedly) satellite internet service, and HughesNet (SUCKS) seems to be the provider of choice. Alas, HughesNet (SUCKS) is NOT an adequate alternative - it's unreliable and slow. REALLY slow.
We have called support any number of times, been on hold for hours, had our case escalated at least 5 times, and still we have no answers. The service does work on occasion, but it's EXTREMELY unreliable. And for a service that bills itself as a "fast alternative to dial-up", it's absurdly slow. I'll grant that it's tolerably fast at 10am, but at 6pm - when people are at home surfing, right? - it's so slow as to be unusable.
So this all boils down to:
1) I hope to have reliable internet soon (I have a few things I'm working on...)
and
2) DO NOT - EVER - subscribe to HughesNet without FULLY understanding what they provide, and how truly crappy their service - and customer support - is.
P.S. I should add a quick caveat here - their customer service is nothing but polite. They've all been very nice and unfailingly polite. It does not, however, excuse the incompetence of the entire organization.
I first came across Miguel Iglesias a couple of years ago when he was the featured male model in The Puma Index - a great idea where Miguel changed outfits as the stock market rose and fell. As the market went down, he took his clothes off - so at least there was something to cheer about. The picture above, I think, is from when the market was busy crashing.
I don't know much else about him - apparently he's from Spain, but that's about all I can find. If you like Mikey here, be sure to click through - you can see all of him.
What on earth can you say about a guy like Ryan Gosling. He's just about perfect. Handsome? Check. Charming? Check. Talented? Check. Rich? Check.
Ryan, as you might guess, is one of my absolute favorites. He's easily one of the best - and best looking - actors working today. As I'm sure many of you know, Ryan got his start on The Mickey Mouse Club, with another of my favorites, once and future Slap Justin Timberlake.
Lately he's been in some great stuff like The Ides of March, Blue Valentine and - my recent favorite - Crazy, Stupid, Love. You remember the scene with Ryan standing naked in front of Steve Carell? That was Crazy, Stupid, Love. Wow. To have been Steve Carell in that scene.
Pursuant to a request by Peter, I'm pleased to bring you today's Slap victim, Brandon Beemer.
Brandon, as I'm sure many of you know, has been a staple of American soaps for quite a while now. Starting on General Hospital, moving on to Days of our Lives and currently on The Bold and the Beautiful, Brandon has been in soaps for at least 5 or 6 years. I was not terribly surprised to see that Brandon actually made one of his first appearances in David DeCoteau's The Brotherhood. I've never actually watched The Brotherhood - I usually can't sit through a whole David DeCoteau movie - but I'm sure you can imagine how Brandon looked in it.
So please enjoy Brandon - and thanks Peter for the suggestion!

Scot - that certainly seems to be the rumor, based on what I came across in my searches.
Sorry for my extended absence recently, but it's been quite a busy couple of weeks. But with the holidays fast approaching, I finally have a few minutes free. And last night I was watching 90210, featuring the incomparable Matt Lanter. I first noticed Matt (as I'm sure many of you did...) in Manhunt: The Search for America's Most Gorgeous Male Model. Matt ended up leaving early, for being - wait for it - too fat. Christ. Matt looks nearly perfect to me.
After "Manhunt", Matt ended up landing one of his first roles on the short-lived Geena Davis drama Commander-in-Chief. Very cleverly, the producers had Matt playing the role of the president's high-school age son who was on, yes, the diving team. It had all the makings of a show I would have enjoyed, but apparently the ratings sucked. Oh well.
So as I said, lately he's been on 90210, and that seems like it's going to last - with Matt in it. Yay!
I was watching Glee tonight, and realized that I hadn't Slapped everyone's favorite Warbler yet. So today's very well-deserved Slap goes out to Darren Criss.
Not only do I think Darren is smoking hot - I love his character on Glee too. And it looks like next week will start some drama in the idyllic world of Kurt and Blaine. Can't wait!

I'm going to try to inject another bit of fur into the proceedings here. And I think today's victim is a prime contender for hot furriness. Justin Chatwin has recently been visible (very visible - as you'll see after the jump) in the US version of Shameless. Personally, I think he's been fantastic in it, even though his character isn't always sympathetic.
His other work of note - at least to me - is War of the Worlds, with my favorite actor Tom Cruise. (Old timers here will recognize that as pure sarcasm...).
But we need to finish this on a positive note, so I'm going to go with the fact that I'm very much looking forward to seeing Justin in season 2 of Shameless. And perhaps we'll get to see more of Justin, like we did at least one of his co-stars.
And Alex plays the young Channing. Yeah, that won't be terrible.
Alex also had a role in the sci-fi bust I Am Number Four. And not too long ago he had a great shirtless moment on Ellen, which you can catch after the jump.
Magic Mike looks like it'll be a real Oscar contender. Based on the life story of Channing Tatum, how can it not be? :) Seriously though, there should be firetrucks outside the theaters when it premieres. Because this much hotness on the screen simultaneously will undoubtedly cause spontaneous combustion. It may well be the SLAP-worthiest movie of all time, that's for sure. :)
I think we need a little more fur around here. There have been a lot of smooth twinks on here lately (surprise!), and the lack of chest hair needs to be fixed.
While Penn Badgley has been known to shave (wax?) his chest on more than one occasion, he really has a very nice patch of fur there. Honestly, it's spectacular - see what you think.
Penn appears to be best known for his role in Gossip Girl, but I confess that I've never watched the show. No, really, I'd tell you. It's actually surprising, I guess, that I haven't, given the contingent of hotness in it every week.
Actually, now that I review his resume, I don't think I've ever actually seen Penn on screen in anything. Just his screen caps. And I guess that's OK.
Sorry for my recent neglect of my Slapping duties, but I've been traveling for the last few days, and I didn't get them all lined up in advance. But hopefully today will make up for some of my absence.
Mike Vogel is today's victim. If you've been watching the new series Pan Am you've been seeing Mike as captain Dean Lowery. Mike actually wasn't the first actor chosen to play Dean - that honor actually goes to Jonah Lotan - but I guess ABC wanted a slightly bigger name (or better actor?) to take the role as the rolled it out for a whole season.
I actually wasn't sure I was going to enjoy Pan Am - I'm a big time airplane geek, and I'm a stickler for accuracy in such things - but it's actually pretty entertaining. I can't say they get all of the facts right, and the renderings of aircraft behavior are really distracting to me. But the characters are pretty enjoyable. You should check it out if you haven't.
And actually, next week looks like a good place to start - because Mike will actually have his shirt off for the first time. YAY!
I also remember Mike from Supercross where he looked really cute and scruffy. I haven't really watched much of the other stuff he's been in, but I'm sure he was good in it.
Today's Slap goes out to one of the most beautiful men on the planet. As you can imagine, he's one of my current obsessions.
Matt Bomer is probably best known for his role as the con-turned-fed Neal Caffrey in White Collar on USA. Personally, I'd enjoy White Collar even without Matt - and his incredible body - in the starring role. But he makes a good show great, at least for me. And the producers know what they're up to since they have him take off his shirt pretty regularly.
The really big recent news about Matt, however, is that he'll be playing a role (I'm not sure how big a role...) in the upcoming Magic Mike, the upcoming film based on Channing Tatum's early career as a stripper. I know that we'll see a lot of Matt, based on his interview with MTV, conveniently showing over at Towleroad. And if you haven't heard, the movie will also be starring Channing himself, plus other upcoming Slaps like Alex Pettyfer .
Thom wrote to request today's Slap - thanks for writing, Thom! - and I must say that I'm more than happy to oblige this (and most...) requests. But I confess that British actor Henry Cavill is truly something special and he was well on his way to being Slapped even if he'd never been requested.
I first really noticed Henry as he played Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk in Showtime's version of The Tudors. You'll notice, if you follow the link to the Duke of Suffolk, that there's a portrait of the actual Duke. He looks very little like Henry Cavill. Frankly, I'd much prefer Henry's version of the Duke, to the one on Wikipedia.
Henry has recently raised his profile quite a bit by landing the role of Clark Kent / Superman in the next reboot of the Superman franchise, Man of Steel. A few pictures of him on set have leaked out here and there - and WOW! - he certainly does look super.
He's been in a few other things, but I've never seen him in anything but the Tudors. But that's OK - he looked so fabulous in that, it would be hard to top. Let me know what you think!

I didn't really have a solid plan for who to Slap today, but news over the weekend crystallized that lack-of-plan into a golden opportunity. Today's Slap goes out to newly-out (at least publicly) actor Zachary Quinto. There's been a lot of speculation, for quite some time, about Zachary, and as Andy Towle noted he's probably been out by "normal people standards" for quite some time.
But over the weekend Zachary officially (I guess?) came out in an interview with New York Magazine. He followed that up with a moving post on his own blog.
You should remember Zachary from his role as Spock in JJ Abrams' reboot of Star Trek from 2 years ago. And he is of course slated to be in the sequel that's currently anticipated for next year, I believe. And of course if you're a more dedicated sci-fi/fantasy fan, you really enjoyed his work in Heroes as the sociopathic killer Sylar. And he spent a season on one of my current obsessions 24.
Thanks, Zachary, for coming out - your raised public profile will surely help some closeted teenage sci-fi fan come to terms with his own sexuality.
I don't know if I can stand to watch him every week, but it was actually a nice performance.
