It's not that I think stupidity should be punishable by death. I just think we should take the warning labels off of everything and let the problem take care of itself.

Brandon I was worried when I saw Brandon talking with Diana Ross, and he sang a bar or two of "You Can't Hurry Love". It was totally uninspired, and that carried over into his performance tonight. I agree with Simon completely - there was nothing to recommend the performance. He has a nice voice, but really, what else is there? B-.
Melinda This one should be a show stopper. Seriously, you guys. My mom said she doesn't believe Melinda's whole "Who me?" act, but I think I do - I think she's very truly surprised at being where she is. Here we go. I can already see that this performance is way more committed than Brandon's. This isn't the normal upbeat, fun performance she is so good at, but she really can put it together. And this performance is original, not the warmed over nonsense that Brandon pulled. I think that performance is a winner. A.
Chris Sligh Wow, Chris is right - he and Diana have the same damn hair. Is that a good thing? It seems like this could be a good song choice for Chris; I think he can deliver it. Let's see. Eep. Just a skosh pitchy at the start. And honestly, the first 10 bars suck: Boring boring boring. He better bring it soon. He's got the pitch back on track, and it seems like he's settling into the performance. But it's a terrible arrangement. Overall, snooze. C+.
Gina [SIDEBAR]Um. Diana, the word is not "pronunciate", it's "pronounce".[/SIDEBAR] Gina's sounding OK after the first few bars. Could she be better, probably; but this is fundamentally a choice of song that suits her. But not a terribly interesting performance - it'll get by, but we need more. B-.
Sanjaya I will say this, Sanjaya seems like a really nice guy. But he is not a good performer. But I do hope he can do more this week than in hist past few tries. So let's see! Oh lord, WTF is with his hair?? Poor thing! He needs a new stylist. But on to the singing, or lack thereof. This is not getting the job done. Indicated. Quiet. Boring. Hell, the background singers are way more interesting. But I'm betting he's with us for another week. Although Simon doesn't need to be quite so rude. I appreciate his honesty, but the rudeness is not necessary. D.
Haley My husband got Haley right - he saw her and said, "Who is this? Have we ever seen her before?" Exactly. She is completely forgettable. She's very cute, but eh? So let's see if she can bring something tonight. Jeez, honey, we need some volume. Oh god, this performance isn't forgettable at all - it's terrible. Yikes, it's completely schizophrenic and icky. Gosh, I don't even know what score to put here. Bad bad bad. Was Simon on Mars for this performance? It wasn't that bad? He's trying to fuck her. D+.
Phil OK, everyone knows that Phil isn't my favorite. I'm not the least bit convinced that he'll do a good job here. So would anyone be offended if I come back for the next person? OK, I'll make this comment: Terrible. D.
LaKisha As much as I dislike Phil, I like LaKisha. And we know she can bring the performance home, so here we go. Diana's looking forward to this, and so am I. OK, Diana recommended a mic stand, and LaKisha went without - is that a flinch? The good thing, however, is that she was thinking about the performance very carefully, and the fact that she went without the stand is probably very carefully considered. And she has an amazing voice. And Randy makes a good point, her voice is huge, and she's able to really get it out without overdoing it. I think that was a really good performance. A/A-.
Blake Oh boy! This should be a lot of fun. I really hope he brings his beat box skills to this, it could really be a hoot. This is gonna be a tough one, but I think Blake can get it done. His voice doesn't shine as one of the best, but his performances are always more interesting than most. And he definitely made this arrangement his own. It's a tough genre for Blake, but I think it was good. Not outta the park, but certainly good enough to stick around. B+.
Stephanie She sounds better than I remember recently. She really does have a very talented voice. It didn't seem like the most involved performance to me, but better than most of the other things tonight. She was outsung by LaKisha and Melinda - but so was everyone else. B.
Chris Richardson YAY! My favorite! I think. We'll see how he does tonight, but I think he's gonna nail it. That was quite a nellie entrance, frankly. But it's all good. And hell - so far so fucking good on this performance! I think he's doing much better with his arrangement than Blake did. I worry about his voice sometimes - it certainly doesn't have Melinda's or LaKisha's power, but he has a good tone. And he is always committed and seems to have a great time on stage. I have to disagree with Randy - he didn't overdo it at all. No way. Paula got it right - he struck just the right balance of old & new. And I can't agree with Simon - I don't think this genre is Chris' strength, but I think he did a nice job. B+.
Jordin I really don't have a strong opinion about Jordin. She's really neither here nor there for me. She has a nice enough voice, but again, I'm kinda underwhelmed. B.
You know I have to say I really think that this year is much weaker than other years. To me, nobody is a standout except Melinda and LaKisha. I really like Chris and Blake, but they can't really compete with M&L. It's very clear that Melinda and LaKisha should be in the final two in May -- I'm sure it won't happen, but we'll see!
The word Ms. Ross was attempting to use was "enunciate"- pronounce words clearly. "Annunciate" refers to the proclamation of a coming event as in to Mary by the Angel of the coming of Christ. One may pronounce a word- utter a word in a certain way, pronunciation being the standard way of speaking a word. It's all very confusing anyway, I had to look this up in the Oxford Dictionary. Anyway I thought the whole Simon-Ryan "come out of the closet" tiff will be the lead story on the Net and Entertainment shows.

After observing all the performances among the girls, Sanjaya is by far the worst.

All I can hope for is that Sanjaya does not make the top 10. Can you imagine paying to see the AI Tour, and having to hear THAT voice? I have been reading other blogs about AI today, and most hated Blake's performance. I am with you.. I thought it was good. I'm glad Phil isn't your favorite, so you won't hate me when I say this... last night, with those dark circles under his eyes, all I could think of was Uncle Fester.

Wasn't anyone hooting and hollering over the spat between Simon and Ryan? "Stay out of my closet!" "Well, COME OUT!" I was waiting for Ryan to say, "Okay."

As an amateur vocalist who has auditioned for and performed in many community-based vocal groups over the years(Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus, OurSong - the Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chorus), I am wondering why the Idol judges don't place more emphasis on good diction. It is " dont' you" , NOT "done-chew", as one word. Horrid. OK - so I'm a musical purist and an admirer of perfect diction.

...Oh lord, WTF is with his hair?? Poor thing! He needs a new stylist...
I love it!!! I thought he was wearing a wig last night and almost cracked my head open on the coffe table as I fell over laughing. Stylist? He just needs a mirror.
As for being rude....I love when Simon is a bitch, it makes the show great. I'm already interested, but when Simon goes off I just love it. I particularly loved when he told Seacrest Out to come out of the closet. Poor, poor, Seacrest Out...I believe he's straight about as much as I believe he is a centimeter over 5'5"
Back to what I was here for: I think Sanjaya is total crap, but I voted for him and will continue to vote for him because I want to punish American Idol for even letting him go through to begin with. He should've been gonesville with his sister.

I find Sanjaya quite beautiful, and damn the haters. There seems to be some gender trouble when it comes to Sanjaya; he has got to be one of the most sincerely feminine men ever on TV, and it's a girly (vs. womanly) femininity. I'm sure he hasn't been treated well by his peers growing up. I think he has a shot at another reality show: America's Next Top Model. He has Jaeda's jaw and similar features to Coryn (maybe it's just the eyebrows though).
